Dr Adrian Banning MB BS, MD, FRCP, FESC is
a Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
He treats Private Patients at the John
Radcliffe and at the new Manor Hospital in Oxford. He has
an international reputation in percutaneous
coronary intervention particularly in the use of coronary stents.
Heart disease and cancer
are the commonest causes of death in the United Kingdom. Most cardiac
deaths are caused by narrowing of the heart arteries due to a process
called atheroma. Atheroma causes both angina and heart attacks. Fortunately this
can be treated with either medication, coronary
angioplasty/stenting or bypass surgery,
restoring people to a normal quality of life.
This
site explains some of the causes of heart disease and explains some of
the treatment options. It demonstrates how stents work including
videos of stents being deployed and explains why drug eluting
stents are useful.

When the lining of the heart
artery splits, small blood particles called platelets accumulate
causing reduced blood flow and a heart attack. |
